"Sermons without Words"

The recent visit of hurricane Irene to our region has left devastation that has affected virtually everyone here in New Jersey, either directly or by association with family members or friends affected. While such storms wreak havoc on homes and properties, they also, ironically, are the occasions when the goodness and kindness of human nature shines forth in adversity.

In recent days I have heard so many stories of Christian charity put into practice through the Diocese.  Although many of you could not attend Mass last Sunday, August 28 because of the storm through no fault of your own whatsoever, you preached your own powerful “sermons without words” to build up the Body of Christ through your prayers and generous care and concern for others. For that we can say a special prayer of thanks at Mass this Sunday.

The clergy and people of the Diocese of Trenton in all our parishes have been very much on my mind and in my heart during these past few days. Thank you for all the good you do! As your Bishop, I pray that the good Lord will help us all return to normal life as soon as possible.
