Where is the gold in the golden years? Ask retirees, and one of the first responses is travel. The gift of leisure after years of a daily job creates great freedom to indulge one’s desire for adventure.

Today’s travel, however, is not all about covering territory, but seeking enrichment.

Spring Lake parishioner Donahue marks 100 years of faith, family
On March 20, Rose Donahue turned 100 years old – but to this spry centenarian, age is only a number.

A parishioner of St. Catharine-St. Margaret Parish, Spring Lake, since the early 1960s, Donahue still lives in her home and can recall the name of every religious sister who taught her in school.

Centenarian Rubisch recalls life before modern conveniences
Although she just celebrated her 100th birthday in February, Jennie Rubisch of Jesus the Good Shepherd Parish, Beverly, doesn’t think she’s old, as family and friends can attest.

“One time when visiting [Wiley’s Christian Retirement Community, Marlton], I was taking Jennie in the wheelchair to the dining area,” recalled fellow parishioner JoAnn D’Noia, who frequently visits Rubisch.

Diocese's retirees find purpose, health, happiness in new work and ministry

Well before he was ordained a deacon, Bill Wilson was involved in the construction industry and spent many happy years as superintendent of a large company. He was asked, in 1998, to serve on the diocesan building commission, a volunteer position of one or two days a week. In 2008, he became diocesan director of the Office of Property and Construction, retiring, for the third time, in 2015.

Deacon Wilson laughs when his retirement history is mentioned, saying, “There’s always work to do,” which is why few were surprised when he returned to the diocesan Chancery in Lawrenceville in late summer 2017, this time as a consultant with the diocesan Department of Risk Management.

Seniors find benefits of working with older pets go both ways

The Internet is full of stories about gratifying relationships between senior citizens and older animals, and as someone who specializes in geriatric and integrative medicine for pets, Dr. Laurel C. Himes reads a lot of them.

Himes, who opened Beach Animal Hospital in Point Pleasant Beach in 1995, said such articles are simply examples of how that companionship can benefit both species, bringing comfort to all – be they two- or four-legged.

At 106, centenarian honored in St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral

Longtime parishioner Ambrose “Amby” LeVan, 106 years old in November, was honored Nov. 26 at the end of the 10 a.m. Mass in St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral Parish, Freehold.
