At Easter Vigil, Bishop O'Connell preaches on the promise of the Messiah; new members celebrated

In the Trenton Diocese, churches were full March 31 with countless faithful eagerly awaiting the moment when the dark hours marking the Death of Jesus give way to the light of his return. In just two of those churches, Trenton’s St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral and St. Barnabas, Bayville, the jubilant sense of expectation was palpable during the Easter Vigil.

In the Cathedral, Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., baptized three young men and confirmed 22 faithful of many generations.

Joy, peace, gratitude highlight Easter morning celebrations around Diocese

Joining their brothers and sisters around the world in celebrating the risen Lord, the Diocese’s faithful reflected on joy and peace in the Resurrection during the Easter morning Masses they attended with family and friends.

Hope of Easter breaks routine, renews lives, Pope says during Vigil

VATICAN CITY – Truly celebrating Easter means allowing Jesus to triumph over personal fears and give life to hope, creativity and care for others, Pope Francis said.

Easter is "an invitation to break out of our routines and to renew our lives, our decisions and our existence," the Pope said during the Easter Vigil March 31 in St. Peter's Basilica.

On Good Friday, Bishop speaks of crucifix as an enduring symbol of love

Faithful across the Diocese of Trenton came together Good Friday, joining in prayer, reflection and Veneration of the Cross in anticipation for the coming of Easter.

Common in reflections of parishioners who attended the service commemorating the Passion and Death of Jesus in St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold, and St. George Church, Titusville, were gratitude for the sacrifice and love of Jesus, and a sense of duty to serve and make sacrifices for others.

“It is realizing the sacrifice that Jesus made for us – a solemn day of being thankful for his sacrifice,” said Patricia Clinton-Luke, a member of St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, in reflecting on Good Friday.

Nationally televised Easter Mass to feature Diocese of Trenton, St. Catharine Church
On Easter Sunday, as an anticipated 4 million plus viewers from around the United States tune in to the national televised Mass of the Resurrection of the Lord, they will be taken to Spring Lake, NJ, and the unique church thought to be among the most beautiful sites along the Jersey Shore.

This year, the televised Mass takes place in St. Catharine Church, and features Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., as principal celebrant and homilist, several concelebrating priests and more than 300 worshipers who gathered from around the Diocese of Trenton.
