A Message from Bishop O'Connell: It all depends on Easter

St. Paul wrote, “If there is no Resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised.  And if Christ has not been raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith (1 Corinthians 15: 13-14).”

Those are some pretty big “ifs” with some pretty big consequences for us as Christians.  Think about them for a moment.  Everything we preach in the Church and everything we believe comes down to this: Jesus Christ has risen from the dead!  It’s all about Easter!

Living Last Supper performance in Fair Haven dedicated to longtime 'apostle'
As the cast of the Living Last Supper prepare for their annual production at Nativity Parish, Fair Haven, this year’s performance will hold special significance as they carry the show onward without their friend and longtime cast member, John DiDomenico.

DiDomenico, who portrayed the apostle Andrew in the play for six years, passed away last April after a long battle with cancer.

Keeping the Feast Column: Green Soup and potato pancakes a Triduum tradition to savor
Before “The Sound of Music” debuted on Broadway or morphed into one of the most enduring movies of all time, there was a real von Trapp family. I was so very fortunate to learn their story secondhand from the father of a good friend way back when. More ...

Mercer County parishes uphold sacred Roman Station Church custom
Pilgrims who travel to Rome during Lent have a unique opportunity to participate in a custom that dates back to the fourth century – one that began as a way to strengthen the community in while honoring the holy martyrs of Rome. The faithful would journey through the streets to various churches and as they walked, they would pray the Litany of the Saints. The Holy Father, who is the bishop of Rome, would join them, lead them in prayer and celebrate Mass in the church. More ...

Diocese's faithful experience God's mercy in 24 Hours for the Lord initiative

When Pope Francis called on faithful around the world to join in the second annual 24 Hours for the Lord initiative, he asked that at least one church in each diocese open its doors around the clock for Eucharistic Adoration and Reconciliation March 9 and 10.

That request was honored across the Trenton Diocese as parishes in Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean Counties accepted the invitation from Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., to “take advantage of this special time of grace and penance.”

Watch and Pray: Bishop O'Connell reflects on '24 Hours for the Lord'
I didn’t know what to expect as I opened the door to St. Joseph Church in Trenton shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday, March 9.

Despite the late hour, well over 100 people were scattered throughout the Church in silent prayer as 10 parish churches in the four counties of the  Diocese celebrated this Lent’s “24 Hours for the Lord,” offering the Sacrament of Penance and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament literally around the clock.

Keeping the Feast Column: Emptying the fridge can lead to hearty soup

There are few things I enjoy more than watching Jacques Pépin cook on public television.

Pépin, whose most recent book is “Heart and Soul in the Kitchen,” conveys such love of family and food and his recipes are so warmly adaptable that it often seems like a favorite uncle has welcomed me to the counter to learn at his side.

Keeping the Feast Column: Coconut curry brings taste of Church of India to table
Over the years, many wonderful friends have volunteered in the mission fields and brought back not only moving stories of their time but great recipes to share as well. One of the first to do so spent a year in Kerala, India, and returned with great insights about the Saint Thomas Christians who trace their origins to St. Thomas the Apostle in the first century. More ...

Notre Dame student Myles Kowalski shares Lenten reflection
So, this morning we ask ourselves some rather thought provoking questions: What is prayer? What does prayer mean? How do we pray? Now all of these questions have an answer, but that answer varies tremendously based on the individual. Because that is one of the greatest thing about prayer, it is so flexible! More ...
