Bishop O'Connell celebrates Mass in Belmar after gazebo gathering canceled

The Mass at the Belmar Beach gazebo may have been canceled due to inclement weather Aug. 19, but rain didn't stop Bishop David M. O'Connell, C.M., from visiting with the Shore community.

Instead, Bishop O’Connell celebrated the 10 a.m. Mass in St. Rose Church, Belmar.

“It was an honor and privilege to welcome Archbishop Waclaw Depo of the Polish Metropolitan Archdiocese of Czestochowa  to my home for lunch on Thursday, August 9.  What a delightful man and what a wonderful, historic post to have.  It is by sheer coincidence that this weekend our Polish Catholics from the Diocese of Trenton  will embark upon their annual pilgrimage to the Our Lady of Czestochowa Shrine in Doylestown. PA.

Diocesan-sponsored addiction symposium to address parish role in supporting recovery

A spiritual disease. A crisis of the soul. Those are some ways Father John Stabeno describes how addiction is an epidemic requiring a swift, holistic and comprehensive response.

“Pope Francis has said the Church needs to be a field hospital, and if addiction is a spiritual disease then the Church must be the triage unit,” he said. “Those with addictions need to know God as the solution.”

Bishop O'Connell to lead historic pilgrimage to Guadalupe Shrine in Mexico City

A dream come true.

That was one way the upcoming pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mexico City, with Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., is being described by those who have been working to make the journey possible.

“I was thinking there was no possibility, or that maybe in five years we would get to go,” said Josué Arriola, director of the diocesan Department of Evangelization and Family Life, who entertained the idea of the pilgrimage.

Evangelization key message of National Diaconate Congress, local deacons say

Calling the event “powerful and reflective,” deacons from the Diocese of Trenton and their wives were among the more than 1,300 brethren and their families at the 2018 National Diaconate Congress, held July 22-26 in New Orleans.

Exploring the theme “Christ the Servant: Yesterday, Today and Forever,” the five-day conference of Masses, general assemblies and workshops was sponsored by the National Association of Diaconate Directors and marked the 50th anniversary of “Sacrum Diaconatus Ordinem,” the document issued by Blessed Paul VI restoring the permanent diaconate.

Diocese takes part in workshop to prepare for revised Spanish Roman Missal

It’s been nearly seven years since the English translation of the Missale Romanum (Roman Missal) – the ritual text of prayers and instruction for the celebration of Mass – was implemented in the United States.

Now a revised ritual, Misal Roman, tercera edicion, has been prepared for the country’s Spanish-speaking Catholics; it takes mandatory affect Dec. 2, the first Sunday of Advent.

Annual picnic fosters camaraderie among Diocese's seminarians
Great food and beautiful weather set the backdrop for a special summer gathering of the Diocese of Trenton’s 17 seminarians the evening of July 19.

Hosted by the Diocese on the grounds of St. John the Baptist Parish, Allentown, the picnic afforded the men, who are pursuing studies in three different seminaries, an opportunity to socialize and share their seminary experiences as they journey toward their goal of one day serving as priests for the Diocese.
