On the First Sunday of Lent, Feb. 18, Dean Lentz took a giant step toward honoring the promise he made to become Catholic 23 years ago.

In St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold, along with 213 fellow catechumens from around the Trenton Diocese, he was called by name to join the elect. They will enter into full Communion with the Catholic Church, receiving the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil on March 31.

Annual Catholic Appeal highlights the work done in love

Immaculate Heart of Mary Sister Mary Agnes Ryan made something of a confession when she spoke about her vocation during the Diocese of Trenton’s Annual Convocation for Religious.

“The love of my life is Jesus Christ, and for 52 years, with his grace, I have responded to his call to go where he wanted me to go, for as long as he’s wanted.”

That reflection from the diocesan director of the Department of Catechesis was one of many “Stories of Love” that are featured in the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal.

Update: At conference, catechists reminded that Jesus' work close at hand

Gathered for a roundtable discussion with more than 100 catechists, international formation-education consultant Sister Patricia McCormack relayed an important message – conveying their own devotion to Jesus is the most important gift they can give their students.

“Books won’t do it if we are not authentic. While we may not have all the answers, we know the one who does know all the answers,” the Immaculate Heart of Mary sister said. “Be people who are willing to share. Smile, that’s very important. Keep in mind that you are here to serve. … If you get criticism, ask [yourself], ‘What’s the message in that? What can I learn from that?”

At conference, catechists reminded to have the heart of Jesus when carrying out their ministry
Practical suggestions, words of encouragement and ways to become reenergized in the ministry of catechesis were highlights presented during a formation day the diocesan Department of Catechesis hosted Feb. 3 in St. Robert Bellarmine Co-Cathedral, Freehold.

The day, which was open to catechists, parish catechetical leaders and anyone using home study for religious education, featured a keynote address on “Structure for Success – Tips That Replace ‘Survive’ with ‘Thrive,’” by Immaculate Heart of Mary Sister Patricia McCormack, who shared her breadth of knowledge from her own extensive classroom and administrative experiences working at the elementary, secondary and college levels.

Addressing a number of areas those in catechetical ministry regularly encounter, part of Sister Patricia's talk included offering organizational tips and suggestions on how catechists can better prepare for their sessions; ways to engage their students more during the classes as well as ways to better engage parents in their children’s faith development.

Holy Land pilgrimage a sacred learning experience for priests of Diocese

There was a common sentiment among the 21 priests who recently returned from their pilgrimage to the Holy Land — they will never be able to read Scripture again without thinking about how they “walked where Jesus walked.”

“To see where our Lord walked, lived his ministry, died and rose from the dead was wonderful,” said Father Mark Kreder, pastor of St. Justin the Martyr Parish, Toms River.
