A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated April 12 in the chapel of St. Catherine of Siena Convent, Caldwell, for Dominican Sister of Hope Mary Lorraine Beckes who died April 8. She was 97.
Born June 14, 1918 in Bitumen, Pa., Sister Mary Lorraine entered the novitiate of the Dominican Sisters of Newburgh, N.Y., Sept. 8, 1942; made her first profession June 18, 1944, and final profession Aug. 21, 1949. She held bachelor of science and master’s degrees in elementary education and a minor in secondary education from Villanova University, Villanova, Pa.
Sister Mary Lorraine taught elementary school students in schools in New Jersey and New York. In the Trenton Diocese, she ministered in Sts. Peter and Paul School, Trenton, from 1945-59, and St. Joseph School, Toms River, from 1972-1988. After leaving full-time teaching, she continued on in St. Joseph School as a teachers’ assistant until her retirement in July, 2009.
Sister Mary Lorraine is survived by a sister and several nephews.
