Faithful of all generations gather with Bishop in support of law enforcement community

A new generation has emerged since the pipes and drums of the first Diocesan Celebration of Law Enforcement – widely known as the Blue Mass – first echoed through Trenton’s St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral 19 years ago.

So, it seemed fitting April 17 that scores of Catholic school students, representing that new generation, were among nearly 1,000 law enforcement officers who filled the Cathedral to capacity for the annual gathering celebrated by Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M. Students from Trenton Catholic Academy, Hamilton, and Notre Dame High School and St. Ann School, both Lawrenceville, served at the altar, provided the musical liturgy and stood in prayerful support for the men and women who dedicate themselves to the public.

Faith gives local police officer strength in life-and-death situations

For more than a decade, Patrick Brady was a man families prayed they would never see standing at the front door.

Brady, a lieutenant in the New Jersey State Police, spent more than 10 years in the Fatal Accident Investigation Unit and was often tasked with informing families when their loved one had died in an auto accident. He still remembers his first notification, the family of a young man who had skidded off the Garden State Parkway and hit a tree.

“I had never performed a next of kin notification before, “Brady said. “We responded to the victim’s residence, one he shared with his parents, grandmother and sister. Never before have I witnessed such raw and unabridged anguish. The news shattered that family, it broke them, and the memory remains seared in my brain.”

Collection underway in Catholic schools to help hospitalized children and their families

On any given day, in just about every Catholic school, students are involved in the effort to help others. From raising funds for worthy non-profits, to visiting nursing homes and stocking food pantries, there is no limit to the many acts of charity and kindness that are undertaken as part of the Catholic school experience.

But over the next few weeks, the 31 Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese of Trenton will be dedicating themselves to a single service project, and the beneficiaries will be sick children and their families in about a dozen hospitals spanning Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean Counties.
