Guadalupe torch procession: what you need to know

From staff reports

Faithful of the Diocese of Trenton will be able to follow the journey of “Las Antorchas Guadalupanas” as they travel from one worship site to the next Dec. 2 through Trenton, culminating with Mass in St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, which will be celebrated by Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M.

Pilgrims may choose to walk the entire 3.8-mile route or join the festivities at any of the four procession sites. Livestreaming of the entire procession will be available on large screens in the lower level of the Cathedral, including Rosary recitation and music. Those wishing to walk only part of the route can view livestreaming at each site until the procession arrives.

All participating churches have parking available. There will be shuttle buses operating from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from the parking area of the Cathedral, making stops at each of the four procession destinations:

Immaculate Conception Church (Our Lady of the Angels) • 8:30 a.m. pilgrims gather; 9 a.m. procession begins

St. Anthony Church (Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony) • livestreaming available for those waiting here to join the procession

St. Joseph Parish • livestreaming available

St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral • pilgrims arrive with torches; celebration of noon Mass with Bishop O’Connell

Following Mass in the Cathedral, there will be traditional Hispanic music, dances, food and more in the lower level of the cathedral as well as the parish gymnasium across the street, which will also be live streamed.

Encouraging the Diocese’s faithful to take part in the pilgrimage, Josue Arriola, director of the diocesan department of Evangelization and Family Life, said the torch flames carry “a message of peace and hope on its journey that is so desperately needed in the times we are living in.”

For those wanting to watch from home, livestream of the day can be viewed at Facebook.com/CatolicosdeTrenton, the diocesan Spanish-language Facebook page.
