The joint choirs of Villanova University, Villanova. Pa., will play a special role in the World Meeting of Families during a free concert Sept. 24.
The Villanova University Voices and Singers will deliver the world premiere of the oratorio “The Wedding Feast of the Lamb” at 8 p.m. in the historical St. John the Evangelist Church, located on South 13th Street just blocks from the site of the World Meeting of Families.
Cormac O’Duffy’s new work, based upon Biblical passages on marriage and family, features main roles performed by singers hailing from Opera Philadelphia. They will be joined by a youth orchestra from area charter high schools, and the concert will include dance and congregational singing.
“This is a very exciting prospect for our Choirs this year – to be a part of the celebration of our city and preparing the way for the arrival of Pope Francis,” said Christine Nass, assistant director of music activities in Villanova, and director of the Villanova Voices. “It is a privilege and we are looking forward to it immensely.”
O’Duffy shared similar anticipation and excitement.
“This is a great honor for us, to sing about the joy of marriage and the gift of family during this historical celebration in Philadelphia,” O’Duffy said. “We are all excitedly preparing for the arrival of Pope Francis who gave his blessing to the composition.”
