'Love and be loved,' thousands of youth hear at Mass before March for Life

WASHINGTON – The Capital One Arena in Washington, which typically hosts professional basketball and hockey games and sold-out concerts, was filled with thousands of youth from around the country who gathered there Jan. 19 to stand up for life.

The Archdiocese of Washington's annual Youth Rally and Mass for Life preceded the 45th annual March for Life marking the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.

Diocese's faithful march for life, share personal stories

In previous years, participants in the annual March for Life showcased their tenacious commitment to the pro-life cause by steadfastly bracing wind, sleet and snow on behalf of the unborn. 

This year in Washington, temperatures in the high 40s helped marchers feel a little less frigid – but no less determined. 

“I have the opportunity to see so many students grow in their faith and stand up for what they believe,” said Deborah Flego, moderator of Red Bank Catholic High School’s Respect Life club, Caseys4Life.

Every child 'a precious gift from God,' Trump tells pro-life rally

WASHINGTON – In remarks broadcast to the March for Life from the White House Rose Garden, President Donald Trump said that his administration "will always defend the very first right in the Declaration of Independence, and that is the right to life."

He invoked the theme of this year's march, "Love Saves Lives," and praised the crowd as being very special and "such great citizens gathered in our nation's capital from many places for one beautiful cause" – celebrating and cherishing life.

March for Life events in Freehold, Trenton, Washington promote pro-life stance
Faithful of the Diocese of Trenton will have numerous opportunities to be part of the 45th annual March for Life, the world’s largest pro-life demonstration, through Masses and other events being held within the Diocese as well as the march Jan. 19 in Washington, D.C.

Plenary indulgence offered for those taking part in March for Life celebrations
In a letter sent to all U.S. bishops Dec. 20, Cardinal Donald Wuerl of the Archdiocese of Washington and Bishop Michael F. Burbidge of the Diocese of Arlington announced on behalf of the Holy See that a plenary indulgence can be obtained under certain conditions and with specific intentions by the Christian faithful who are taking part in the “sacred celebrations, along with the great assembly of people, throughout the whole course of the annual event that is called ‘March for Life’”... More ...
