Diocesan teams face off for basketball tournament titles

One overtime wasn’t enough for the boys’ junior varsity basketball team from St. Catharine, Spring Lake, to overtake a tough squad from St. Gregory the Great, Hamilton Square, for a Diocesan Basketball Tournament title March 5 in the CYO’s South Broad Street Center, Trenton.

The tightly contested game went into its second overtime before the Lakers topped the Lions, 50-46, when the final buzzer sounded. 

St. Catharine’s Mickey Schroeder led his team to victory with 16 points.

In the girls’ JV division, St. Catharine, Holmdel, defeated St. Mary, Bordentown, 27-12, with help from leading scorer Kamilyn Bevacana (8 points).

The St. Catharine, Spring Lake, boys’ varsity squad bested their counterparts from St. Gregory’s, 63-26. Ryan Mabrey helped his St. Catharine teammates in the victory by netting 17 points.

St. Gabriel, Marlboro, defeated St. Mary of the Lakes, Medford, in a tight, 19-16, contest in the girls’ varsity division. Laura Morehead led St. Gabriel’s with 7 points.

This year’s tournament featured the two teams that qualified from each Diocese’s four counties – Burlington, Mercer, Monmouth and Ocean – in each of the four divisions. 

The single-elimination tournament began Feb. 27 with games in various locations throughout the Diocese, leading up to the March 5 championship games in Trenton.

Teams that competed throughout the tournament include:

  • Girls’ junior varsity – Our Lady of Good Counsel, Moorestown; Our Lady of Sorrows-St. Anthony, Hamilton; St. Catharine, Spring Lake; St. Catharine, Holmdel; St. Gabriel, Marlboro; St. James, Red Bank; St. Mary, Bordentown, and St. Paul Princeton.
  • Boys’ junior varsity – Our Lady of Sorrows, Mercerville; St. Catharine, Spring Lake; St. Catharine, Holmdel; St. Charles Borromeo, Cinnaminson; St. Gabriel, Marlboro; St. Gregory the Great, Hamilton Square; St. Leo the Great, Lincroft, and St. Mary of the Lakes, Medford.
  • Girls’ varsity – Sacred Heart, Riverton; St. Catharine, Spring Lake; St. Catharine, Holmdel; St. Gabriel’s Marlboro; St. Gregory the Great, Hamilton Square; St. Mary of the Lakes, Medford; St. Raphael-Holy Angels, Hamilton, and St. Rose, Belmar.
  • Boys’ varsity – St. Benedict, Holmdel; St. Catharine, Spring Lake; St. Gabriel, Marlboro; St. Gregory the Great, Hamilton Square; St. Leo the Great, Lincroft; St. Mary, Bordentown; St. Mary of the Lakes, Medford, and St. Raphael-Holy Angels, Hamilton.
