Immigration workshop in Trenton aims to educate, dispel myths

From staff reports

Catholic Charities’ El Centro program is co-hosting a workshop on immigration to help educate the public and separate fact from fiction as deportation fears mount among immigrant communities.

“It’s a good opportunity to talk to folks about what their rights are,” said Roberto Hernandez, director of El Centro, Trenton.

The workshop, which will be in Spanish, will be held in the lower-level dining hall of St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral, Trenton. It aims to educate the community and immigrants of immigrant rights and options, as well as promote the services El Centro offers, such as providing a power of attorney.

“We’re looking at how we can help people put together a plan of action,” Hernandez said.

“For people who have deportation orders, there’s nothing we can do about that – the law is the law. But we have to be compassionate, as well,” he said, adding that he hopes the workshop will “set people at ease and let them know the Catholic Church is there for them.”

El Centro helps the Spanish-speaking community with needs such as job training, English as a Second Language courses, parenting classes and immigration services. Most services are offered free of charge.

For more information on the workshop, call El Centro at 609-394-2056 or St. Mary of the Assumption Cathedral at 609-396-8447.
