Excitement and enthusiasm prevailed in St. Mary of the Pines Church, Manahawkin, Oct. 14 as nearly a thousand youth, ministry leaders, schools and families gathered to welcome the start of the diocesan Year of Youth celebration.

Together, they prayed, shared camaraderie and joined in the celebration of Mass by Bishop David M. O’Connell, C.M., and about 20 priests who concelebrated.

“We begin this special year with the Eucharist, our greatest and most important prayer,” said Bishop O’Connell.

In his homily, the Bishop reminded the young people about how the Mass for the Year of Youth occurs simultaneously with the Synod on Youth taking place in Rome, where the Holy Father, Pope Francis, and bishops throughout the world are gathering to talk about “young people, the faith and vocational discernment.”
